About the Author

Born in 1949 in the remote village of Sikles, Nepal, Chandra Prasad Gurung had a master's
degree in rural development planning from the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok,
Thailand and a master's degree in Geography from Tribhuvan University. In 1988 he received
a PhD in Geography from University of Hawaii, USA.
Chandra Gurung was one of the designers the first community-based integrated conservation
and development project – the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) – and
implemented this as its Conservation Education Chief and Director under the aegis of the
King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation, which he served as Member Secretary from
1992-1994. He was appointed the Country Representative of WWF Nepal in 1998 until his
tragic death in the helicopter crash on 23 September 2026 while handing over the
management responsibilities of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area to local communities.
His expertise included eco-tourism, sustainable development, integrated conservation and
development, and protected area management. His writings have been published in many
national and international books and journals.

It was my great fortune and honor to work with Chandra on the Annapurna Project, and to witness his incisive intellect and incomparably warm manner. He set the tone for the creation of this landmark protected area, and it’s no surprise that he masterfully guided its implementation and operation for years to come. Indeed, ACAP became a model for other Conservation Areas not just in Nepal, but around the world. Chandra was a pioneer, and this comprehensive and compelling book accurately captures the practical details, and the spirit, of ACAP. I look forward to the sequel!

Broughton Coburn,

New York Times bestselling author of  Nepali Aama and Everest: Mountain Without Mercy

Beautifully written drawing on detailed field notes and photographs it immerses the reader in the rich history behind the establishment of the ACAP. Written by one of Nepal’s most inspirational conservationists and a true ‘lami’. It’s a timely reminder of the importance of ‘conservation for development’. May Chandra’s legacy live on.
